What People Say About Us.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect when I see a chiropractor for the first time?
Chiropractic physicians are experts in nonsurgical management of musculoskeletal pain and treatment of spine disorders. On your first visit you will fill out the same kind of paperwork as required in any doctors’ office. Depending on your history and severity of problem, most chiropractic physicians want to see x-rays or a recent MRI of the region of pain. After an examination and review of any diagnostic studies, Dr. True will prescribe a series of treatments to address your complaints. Chiropractic treatment may include a variety of procedures including spinal manipulation, laser therapy and rehabilitation. The benefits of chiropractic care are numerous including, improved neural function, reduced pain, reduction of spasm and improved quality of life. Additional professional services offered by Dr. True include: Nutritional counseling, Lifestyle counseling, Second opinions for complex cases, Expert neurological diagnosis, Wellness care and Treatment of sports injuries.
How many visits are required?
The number of visits required depends on the severity of the injury and your body’s natural healing capacity. On the day of your initial consultation, we will gather all relevant information and perform an examination. Afterwards, we will be able to give you an estimate on the number of sessions required, as well as suggestions for home treatment to expedite the recovery time. Treatment is often scheduled at a frequency of 2-3 visits per week with a reduction in visits as improvement is realized. Because the results of treatment are incremental, improvement in your condition may be gradual over a few weeks or it may be dramatic in just a few visits.
Can you treat all types of injuries?
We are able to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains, strains, and ligament tears. Dr. True has success with treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain. However, when it comes to severe injuries that may be life threatening please go to the closest emergency room for evaluation. Dr. True always wants you to have the most appropriate treatment for your injuries. If we feel that chiropractic care isn’t the best approach to help your
recovery, we will recommend the most suitable treatment or specialist for our patients who may need other types of care.
How soon can you treat me after surgery?
In the majority of post-surgical cases whether it’s a shoulder, knee or spine surgery, the sooner the better. Dr. True has been treating post-surgical pain with laser therapy for more than a decade. Laser therapy is appropriate and beneficial to speed healing and reduce pain in acute injuries as well as after surgery. Laser therapy increases blood flow and reduces inflammation with a positive effect on your total recovery. If you have someone to drive you to our office and your surgeon has cleared you to travel, we will gladly evaluate you to determine if you are a candidate for treatment.
What type of clothing should I wear to my appointment?
We recommend wearing something comfortable and loose fitting to your scheduled appointments. If necessary, you may be asked to change into an examination gown or any work-out clothes that you have brought along for your visit.
What is a Herniated Disc?
The human spine is comprised of a total of 23 sponge-like discs, composed of fibrocartilagenous material which act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. A herniated disc occurs when the
central disc material bulges or protrudes between the vertebrae. Herniated discs are often very painful and may produce pain or numbness in your extremity. Spinal degeneration results when
the disc loses its shock absorbing qualities and begins to stiffen up. The pain and spinal dysfunction associated with disc herniation is frequently treated by chiropractic physicians.
What is a Pinched Nerve?
A pinched nerve is simply another way to describe spinal pain that has a mechanical onset. A pinched nerve can occur in your neck, mid back, rib cage and low back. This type of spinal pain is often dramatically relieved with chiropractic treatment.
What is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is formed from the nerves coming from the base of your spine. The nerve exits the pelvis, runs down the back of the thigh and branches in the back of the knee into the leg and foot. Sciatica is a term used to describe the symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve is irritated, pinched, or damaged. Sciatica is a type of nerve disorder called radiculopathy. Sciatica frequently results from disc herniation where the disc material bulges to the point that spinal roots are compressed. This may also result from a bone spur and osteoarthritis. Symptoms of sciatica commonly include numbness, weakness, shooting pain or a tingling sensation in the foot, calf, thigh, or buttock. Laser therapy and chiropractic care are very effective and highly successful treatments for sciatica. In the majority of cases, surgery is not necessary, and these patients respond favorably to chiropractic care.
What is Radiculopathy?
Radiculopathy is a disorder where the nerves exiting the spine are mechanically compressed or stretched. Radiculopathy can also occur from inflammation of the spinal nerve roots as a result of biochemical irritation. The most common type of radiculopathy is sciatica, followed by cervical radiculopathy which involves the nerves traveling into the arm. Radiculopathy can also affect the nerves in the rib cage area producing numbness and shooting pain in the ribs and chest. Radiculopathy should be evaluated by a chiropractic physician to determine the best treatment protocol. Advanced diagnostic imaging such as MRI or CT may be ordered in the region prior to treatment, although this may not be necessary in mild cases or where symptoms resolve following a few weeks of care.
What is Osteoarthritis and Spinal Degeneration?
There are many types of arthritis that limit joint mobility and cause pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Symptoms include loss of motion, stiffness, and pain on movement. Osteoarthritis is also called wear and tear arthritis and it causes spinal degeneration. Spinal degeneration is very common in the aged population. Over 20 million patients have the disease. Because the incidence increases with age, most patients over age 50, have some degree of osteoarthritis and spinal degeneration. Although the disorder cannot be reversed once it is present, treatment may prevent progression and reduce symptoms without the side effects of medication. Chiropractors are very successful treating this disorder by improving mobility, increasing flexibility and decreasing pain.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disorder that is characterized by abnormally porous bones due to complex factors including hereditary propensity and nutritional deficiencies. An estimated 10 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from osteoporosis and most cases occur in Caucasian females over the age of 50. Those diagnosed with osteoporosis are subject to vertebral and hip fractures, as well as loss of height and chronic back pain.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, the nerve running through the carpal tunnel (in the wrist), is compressed. It is most common in workers using vibrating power tools or in occupations with a considerable amount of repetitive hand use; such as office workers, hairdressers, painters, musicians, and cashiers. Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, and swelling in the hand and fingers. This is often noticeable at night or when you first wake up. Chiropractors treat carpal tunnel syndrome with physical medicine and manipulation. They also look for primary and secondary issues that produce symptoms to help alleviate the cause of the problem.
